The obverse depicts the face of Paul Kruger (hence the name Kruger-rand), a prominent figure who led the Boer resistance against the British. Paul Kruger eventually became the fifth, and last president of the old South African Republic, and held that office for four terms. Designed by Coert Steynberg, the reverse shows a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. This was the same design used on the reverse of the earlier 5 shilling South African coinage for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. The name "South Africa" and the gold content are also inscribed on the Krugerand in both English and Afrikaans.

The 1975 South Africa Krugerrand 1oz Gold Proof Coin was struck by the South African Mint in the year 1975 and belongs to the Krugerrand series of gold proof coins. Each 22 carat fine gold coin contains 1 troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of gold.
