Paul Kruger eventually became the fifth, and last president of the old South African Republic, and held that office for four terms. Designed by Coert Steynberg, the reverse shows a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa. This was the same design used on the reverse of the earlier 5 shilling South African coinage for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.
