A new standing portrait of Britannia has been introduced in the coins of 2008 and it is the work of John Bergdahl who wanted to convey a sense of Britannia being at one with the wind and sea and to make her seem elemental. Britannia here is shown to be maiden-like and innocent while at the same time being a warrior princess. The new reverse design also incorporates traditional motifs, such as the trident and shield, which have long been associated with Britannia in previous coin designs. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s portrait of Her Majesty The Queen.

The 2008 UK Britannia 1oz Gold Coin was struck by the British Royal Mint in the year 2008 and belongs to the Britannia series of gold bullion coins. Each 22 carat fine gold coin contains 1 troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of gold and is legal tender with a face value of £100.
