The 1998 Proof Platinum Eagle marks the first time in history that the US Mint has embarked on a five-year design series for a coin. The "Vistas of Liberty" designs show the unique character and charisma of America's diverse landscapes and capture the spirit and strength of her people. Mint sculptor/engraver John Mercanti's new reverse design depicts a bald eagle in flight off the coast of New England, with a lighthouse towering on a cliff and the moon rising in the evening sky. The obverse is Mercanti's stunning Portrait of Liberty - America's most recognized symbol of freedom - the Statue of Liberty.
The 1998 US Eagle 1oz Platinum Proof Coin was struck by the US Mint in the year 1998 and belongs to the Eagle series of platinum proof coins. Each .9995 fine platinum coin contains 1 troy ounce (31.1035 grams) of platinum and is legal tender with a face value of $100.
While the one ounce coins are generally the most popular amongst bullion investors, the American 1998 Eagle Platinum Proof coin also comes in fractional ounce sizes of half, quarter and one-tenth oz.
