Before 1850, the $10 eagles were the largest denomination US coins. As the $20 coins had twice the face value of the eagle, they came to be known as "double eagles".

Liberty head (coronet) double eagles are categorized into three classes. Coins issued from 1867 to 1876 (and some coins issued in 1866) belong to Class II. Coins in this class have the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" added above the eagle on the reverse. The Liberty Head double eagle was designed by Mint Engraver James B. Longacre. The obverse features a bust of Liberty facing left, wearing a small crown known as a coronet, inscribed with the word "LIBERTY". The reverse design features the Great Seal of the United States with the face value denomination indicated as "TWENTY D".

The 1874 US Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin was struck by the US Mint in the year 1874 and belongs to the Liberty Head Double Eagle series of gold bullion coins. Each .900 fine gold coin contains 0.9675 troy ounce (30.0926 grams) of gold and is legal tender with a face value of $20.
